Tax filings for same-sex couples

Before you file your taxes, there are some things to consider if you live in Kentucky:

  1.  First, we don’t recognize Civil Unions, so you would have to file as two        single individuals;
  2.  Second, your marital status is determined on the last day of the last year. So, If  you were married on December 31, 2014, this will impact your taxes for 2014;
  3.  Third, for Federal Taxes, if you are a married couple, you can file as a married  couple;
  4.  Fourth, for State taxes, you will still have to file as single as of right now, but you  may be able to file for an extension until after the Supreme Court ruling comes  down in June of 2015 and depending on how it is worded, you may be able to  then file as married in Kentucky.

Of course this is just a basic guideline and you will need to talk to your tax preparer for specific advice on your situation.
